OH HAPPY DAY
Adios, Sr. Ortiz.

Comments:
I don't quite understand the joy. Sure, it's sort of a no brainer from a baseball perspective, and there was some complaining last year when he went to the bullpen, but that's to be expected. The guy always gave everything he had. He just didn't always have that much. I don't necessarily want to see him in the rotation, but I'm not really happy to see him go, either.

And he still, for my money, pitched the greatest game I've ever witnessed in person (better than a few shutouts that I've seen).

It's nothing personal, it's just that his inconsistency and unrealized potential were always so frustrating. He pitched some wonderful games -- that face-off against Pedro a few years ago is one of those games that will last forever -- but I never felt comfortable or confident with him on the mound. I often feared his appearances, and as those wondrous outings became rarer, it just got harder and harder to watch.

He was always one of those guys that would fall apart on the mound when adversity turned against him. I wish him luck, but I'm glad that he won't be making $5.5M to wear Angel red in 2005.
